As we get to the end of 2021 we're delighted to annouce that all Ply Guys furniture will be available in Europe via 'Assynt.fr' Order book is open now (via the website) and will be fulfilled from late February 2022
Time to introduce Assynt and Bertrand:
"When it comes to making life changing decisions it is sometimes important to leave some space for intuition and allow your feelings to guide you to the right choice. As a trained mechanical engineer, we were often taught to apply a cartesian approach to anything you will have to design or build. Rationality was at the core of the decision-making process. However, life will also teach you that ultimately things will not go as originally planned, and that you better be prepared for that. So I can say that I have slightly deviated from my Uni textbooks for pretty much everything I do, and especially when it comes to my professional career.
Back in early 2021 I had just bought a VW T6 LWB Kombi and I was browsing Instagram to look for the best layout and DIY tutorials for my van conversion. Here were my criteria: a bed, a place to cook, loads of room to carry all our gear + 2 young kids (age 4 and 6) who have their own gear (although quite different from ours!). We have never been good at limiting the amount of stuff we carry, simply because we don’t want to miss out on a great kitesurf or surf session. And because we are a very active and sport addict family, we usually don’t run out of equipment. We typically carry 5 kites (from 4m2 to 12m2), 2 twin-tips and 2 surfboards, the occasional surf skate, an inflatable paddleboard, and the strict minimum to sleep and eat. Lastly it was important for me to be able to use my van as a daily vehicle, carrying my bike when I go shopping to the city, helping friends move places, etc…. So I needed to be able to remove everything from the van easily and quickly.
Back to Instagram it is filled with great ideas and concepts, but the one that got my attention was not even in my home country. After a few email exchanges with Craig I was convinced I had found the right place and was ready to order my kit, but Brexit deal was in full motion and shipping goods outside of the country was challenging (and expensive) to say the least. That’s when intuition came into play: if I can’t find the right equipment in my home country, why not build them myself and sell them in France. And I will also be doing something I love as a job! A few more emails later with Hamish and Craig, they were keen on developing the brand in Europe and we kicked off the process to establish a sister company across the Channel. I have to say that I have a strong connection with Scotland, having spent my Honeymoon there, with awesome memories of places like the Isle of Skye, Oban, Eilean Donan Castle. We even went for a swim in Loch Lomond. When we lived in New Zealand we loved places that had a strong Scottish connection such as Dunedin. We were touched by the friendly and authentic attitude of the locals. When I met the team in late November in Glasgow to fine tune the last details I knew I had made the right choice.
This partnership with such a cool Scottish company like The Ply Guys was dictated by my intuition and the feelings that we are up for some great stuff and have fun. We have the same vision about what is important for our customers: We do what you guys do, we go out, explore the outdoors, enjoy what nature has to offer, and leave no trace.

Lorsque nous avons à faire des choix déterminants dans notre vie, il est important de laisser une part d’intuition nous guider. Durant ma formation d’ingénieur on nous a inculqué à développer un esprit cartésien pour la conception et la fabrication de machines complexes tels que les avions. Une approche rationnelle rime souvent avec sécurité. Néanmoins le cheminement de la vie nous apprend aussi que tout ne se passe pas comme prévu, et qu’il faut intégrer cette part d’incertitude dans tout ce que l’on entreprend. Avec du recul j’ai le sentiment de ne pas avoir toujours suivi les recommandations de mes professeurs pour mes choix professionnels….
Après avoir fait l’acquisition en début d’année d’un VW T6 Caravelle Long je cherchais de l’inspiration et des idées d’aménagements sur Instagram. J’avais des critères plutôt simples : un lit, un espace pour cuisiner, tout en conservant beaucoup d’espace pour loger tout notre matériel ainsi que nos deux enfants de 5 et 7 ans (et bien sur leurs affaires !). Étant une famille plutôt active et fan de sports, nous transportons en général beaucoup de matériel, notamment car nous ne voulons pas rater une bonne session de surf ou de kitesurf. Nous transportons souvent 5 kites (de 4m2 à 12m2), 2 twintips, 2 planches de surf, parfois un surfskate, un SUP gonflable et le strict nécessaire pour dormir et cuisiner. Le critère principal étant surtout de pouvoir utiliser mon van comme mon véhicule au quotidien, donc de pouvoir transporter mon vélo quand je vais en ville et me gare en périphérie, aider des amis à déménager, etc…. Il était donc primordial de pouvoir enlever mon aménagement facilement quand nous ne partons pas en road-trip.
Internet et Instagram regorgent de concepts et de solutions d’aménagement et je privilégiais une solution locale, mais l’offre qui a retenu mon attention n’était même pas en France. Après plusieurs échanges avec Craig de The Ply Guys j’étais convaincu par mon choix et j’étais prêt à passer commande. Malheureusement le Brexit était passé par là et il devenait compliqué (et cher) d’importer des biens du Royaume-Uni. C’est à ce moment-là que mon intuition m’a suggéré une idée : si je n’arrive pas à trouver un produit proche de chez moi, pourquoi ne pas le fabriquer et le vendre moi-même ? Et dans le même temps je ferai un job qui me passionne ! Après plusieurs échanges avec Hamish et Craig ils étaient séduits par le projet de se développer à l’international et nous avons entrepris de créer une entité de l’autre côté de la Manche. Je dois avouer que j’ai une attache particulière avec l’Ecosse, nous y avons passé notre lune de miel, avec des souvenirs incroyables tels que l’ile de Skye, Orban ou le château de Eilean Donnan. Nous nous sommes même baignés dans le Loch Lomond cher au Capitaine Haddock. Lorsque nous vivions en Nouvelle-Zélande nous avions particulièrement apprécié les lieux ayant un héritage écossais tel que Dunedin, touchés par le côté chaleureux et accueillant des locaux. Lorsque j’ai rencontré l’équipe de The Ply Guys à Glasgow fin Novembre pour finaliser les derniers détails j’ai su que j’avais fait le bon choix.
La décision de m’associer avec une entreprise écossaise jeune et dynamique pour mon nouveau projet professionnel avait été dictée par mon intuition que nous allions faire de belles choses ensemble et surtout nous amuser ! Nous avons la même vision sur ce qui est important pour nos clients : nous avons les mêmes passions, nous aimons passer du temps dehors, profiter de la nature, et ne pas laisser de traces.
Je suis ravi de faire partie de la famille The Ply Guys.
